Axos village
Axos village is built in a fertile area with many springs and a mild climate. In the center of the village there is a water spring. The village is built on the ruins of the ancient city Axos or Oaxos.
Oaxos was built on the hill slopes and had a fortified citadel. Its port was ancient Astali, which s located in a bay in Bali.
This ancient city used to be wealthy and powerful. It also minted its own coins, which depicted the head of god Apollo or goddess Artemis. During the Roman occupation, the city continued to mint its own coins. In the Byzantine era, the area was densely populated, as proven by the 46 churches which used to stand in the area. Today, only nine of them are still preserved.
